CGSS SILAT Slow Training for Radical Handspeed

SILAT TIP 13 - Slow Training for Radical Handspeed

Do you own a 3lbs or 5 lbs dumbell?

If so put one dumbbell in your hand while you sit and watch TV or a
movie and perform as many slow reps as possible with deep breathing of
the root motions of a Sera juru ( I like to use juru 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 9, 12, 14, with one dumbbell and for training with 2 dumbbells i
like juru 11,13, 18) . If you want, work with only one root motion at a
time.

MOVE VERY SLOW. DO NOT TRY TO MOVE FAST WITH WEIGHTS OTHERWISE
YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR LIGAMENTS AND JOINTS.

Train slow with deep breathing.

You will be surprised how much speed and power you will get from doing
your jurus slow with deep breathing and with a weight in your lead
hand.

Once you have done a good amount of reps of a juru motion switch to
the opposite hand.

Once you have confidence in the motion and you have developed good arm
strength gradually move to a 10lbs weight. AGAIN USE CAUTION and move
SLOW! Rome was not built in a day.

Once your arms are stronger from this kind of training, begin to do
root motions on a langkah with a dumbell in your hand.

For example: Use the Square Langkah "Sliwa or Ampat" and stand at the
base of the square in Balabay (Open horse stance with shoulders at a
45degree angle). Step with your right foot first to the left top corner
of the square (L step) once you have stepped perform a juru motion
with right arm and dumbbell in hand and then biset (Backsweep) back to
the starting position and now turn and steo to with the other foot to
the other corner of square and perform same juru motion but now with
left arm with dumbbell. I usually train juru motion # 2 for this and I
will do as many as I can on each side before I go to biset.

You will be surprised how fast you develope speed and power by doing
this sort of excercise but again the key is PRECISION, SLOW MOTION
TRAINING, & DEEP BREATHING.

Once you are confident in these motions and with weight in hand ( I
would recommend you do not go higher than 10lbs so you do not injure
your joints) add a weighted vest to the mix to help your overall body
strength increase.

Next time you go to do pukulan and a biset on a partner or an opponent
you will be surprised how effective and powerful you become.

Another option is to step of to a 45 degree angle (langkah muring) and
perform a juru motion with weight in hand per each step you make.

For a more intense workout that requires a lot of stamina, balance,
focus and breath, perform a sapu with dumbell in lead hand and once in
the sapu position, hold the leg up in the air like a "Shiva" statue
and perform as many SLOW juru motions as possible untill you simply
can not hold the leg in air. Once you finish one side go right to the
next leg and repeat excercise. For example do the sapu and then do as
many juru 2 entry motions (thousand bridges) as you can slowly with
leg in the air. With or with out a dumbbell in hand this excercise is
BRUTAL.

I have been told by some I have fast hands. I will let you in on a
little secret.....I NEVER TRAIN FAST! You want speed train EXTREMELY
SLOW and focused with proper breathing. My teacher Guru Cliff Stewart
has some of the fiercest and fastest Pukulan hands I ever felt and
seen. I know he also trains SLOW. Any time I have seen great masters
train the all seem to have one thing in common.....THEY ALL TRAIN
SLOW.

It makes sense to me to work out exactly how I would defend myself or
protect someone. Its seems like you would want to strengthen the
muscles you actually use in a fight as opposed to the ones that might
slow you down.

Train smart use your common sense and breathe deep.

For more effectiveness in this sort of training stick your tongue
against the roof of your mouth and make sure your spine is
straight....I will go into more details about that on another date.

Peace

Silat Tip 28: THE CONCEPT OF GURU & GIRI

The Dobles Institute News:

Silat Tip 28: THE CONCEPT OF GURU & GIRI why they go hand in hand

Giri (Japanese) - a Japanese value roughly corresponding to "duty",
"obligation", or even "burden of obligation" in English.

Giri (Sanskrit) - in an Indian context, "Giri," means "mountain" (e.g.
nilgiri, ratnagiri). As a Sanskrit honorific it means "venerable,
elevated, worshipful" and it is in that sense that the title is
applied to Sannyasins." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giri

" The birth of the concept of giri occurred during the feudal period
in Japan, and holds the highest regard in human relationships. A basic
breakdown of the the relationships are: Master-subordinate,
parent-child, husband-wife, brothers-sisters, friends, and sometimes
even enemies and business associates. The most basic definition one
can give giri is a debt of gratitude and a self-sacrificing pursuit of
their happiness.

Everyday examples of giri can be found in social customs such as New
Year's cards, gifts such as year end presents. When one does act
involuntarily to a person to whom one feels giri, one must not take
into account one's own suffering when alleviating or helping another
out of a difficult situation." -
http://japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa071497.htm

THE CONCEPT OF GURU & GIRI why they go hand in hand.

In Japan there is a concept that is similar to KARMA. Its called
"Giri".

My Hoshin Tao Chi Kung, Hoshinjutsu & Ninpo teacher Soke Dr. Glenn J
Morris always taught us that one had to have "GIRI". It was even above
KARMA to a Budo warrior.

What does this have to do with Silat? Just wait I'll get to it....

Soke Morris used to say if you take once give back twice. If you are
given once give back twice. Or if you have received something special,
a valuable lesson, a gift, a form of energy, a chance to learn or
experience something in life than you would make it your obligation to
always to honor and pay back in some way at least twice those that
gave you such gifts or lessons, experience or energy. How would you do
that? You would always give them back either by giving them credit,
giving them energy, doing something special for the person, always
being there for them.

For example Hatsumi Sensei Promoted Dr. Morris to high Black Belt
level in Ninjutsu, Glenn turn around and made sure Hatsumi Sensei
received several honorary Doctorate degrees from respected USA
Universities and always mentions and credits Hatsumi in all his
published works. (THAT IS GIRI). If we gave energy work or healing or
showed Glenn something he would always turn around and load us up with
more info, energy, understanding. If you gave him once he would give
you twice. You get it?

Usually this concept is expected of students but not of the Guru
itself. WRONG........

The Guru should have a form of GIRI towards his or her students as
well.

The Guru receives from the students a form of payment, an exchange of
energy, a chance to teach, a chance to heal if he is of the healing
types. Those are the experiences that allow the Guru to be a Guru. Its
not a Piece of paper that says you are a GURU. That does not make you
a Guru nor qualified to teach, heal, guide coach etc.

Now here is where the concept gets very interesting. A lot of times
GURUS, SIFUS, SENSEIS, PENDEKARS, MAHAGURUS, forget that its their
OBLIGATION to take care of their students and to back them up no
matter what as it is the students job to do the same for their
teacher. Giri is similar to ADAT HORMAT or way of conduct and respect
found in PENCAK SILAT. But its a little more. IMMORTALITY of a teacher
and his or her methods comes through the longevity of their students
and the carriers of their wisdom. If there is no GIRI in a system it
will not evolve or grow or survive. Some one has to value it and honor
its roots and maintain it and give back at least twice to the systems,
the teachers, the future students etc.

To be the teacher you need students, but to be the true teacher you
teach your students to teach themselves and to teach others and you
value their efforts and time spent training.

I have seen in the martial arts how things go sour when there is no
concept of value or "giri" implemented to the system. A lot of folks
promise things but few deliver. A lot of folks keep their students as
indentured servants.

What happens if you negatively show no giri?....

If you forget your students once they will forget you twice.......

A lot of folks claim to be pendekars but can't even heal themselves. A
pendekar is a healer/warrior/shaman. Its not a title you buy. If you
think you are one i suggest you test your skills with people with real
problems (tumors, HIV, serious illness, Schizophrenia etc) A real Guru
is a guide and a protector. In Java a real silat master is more than
just a fighter. They take the value and spiritual side very serious as
well.

Martial arts with only "FIGHTING" is incomplete. The balance is needed
to understand the full circle.

As Soke Glenn said to me in his garage as I received a serious ass
whoopin -

"To learn to hurt you must learn to heal." He took away the damage and
pain in seconds using energy work and Chi Gung.

"If you take once give back twice"

Meditation:

1) breath in for 4 seconds 2) exhale for 8 increase each ratio by one
second till you go to your max. If you take from the universe one
breath give it back twice!

Healing:

If you received healing or energy or chi from someone give them back
2x's what you received.

Martial Giri:

If he hit you once you hit twice! Generously GIVE IT to those that
BRING IT.

Giri leads to generosity. Generosity leads to Abundance. KEEP
intentions positive.

What is a Guru's Giri? To teach the art to those that want to learn it
with out secrets and with out holding back information in fear of
loosing something, to be there for the students when no one else will,
to be a protector and a healer, to evolve the arts even further than
when they first experienced the art. If you as a teacher show Giri to
your students. your students will always show Giri back to you even
when you pass. Life is unpredictable and not as long as we all hope or
wish for. But I know from experience because I have had teachers that
have passed. I still show Giri to the teachers that showed me Giri and
even to those that lacked Giri. And it has made me a better person and
a better teacher to pass on what i know.

Try to implement GIRI in your life whether it be with your family,
teachers, students, friends, elders, enemies etc. Ultimately we are
all part f the same divine source so by showing Giri you are showing
the highest form of value to your true nature.

Testimonials:

" The thing that I like the most about working with Guru
Dobles via CGSS distance course is the reality that one is
exposed to. Guru Dobles makes sure to send you enough
training videos to keep you occupied, its up to you to
actually make it happen. There are forum posts made that
constantly help one understand Silat, and how to train
with the right mind. Guru Dobles gives you the tools and
Silat will teach you, just take the steps down the path
and you will be very pleased with the results."
- Brady Hansen

"Guru Santiago's CGSS Pencak Silat distance course is second to none in terms of the quality and quantity of the material given to the student and also the level of support provided.  In the videos and during in-person training sessions, he effortlessly demonstrates and articulates the science behind the movements.  He also emphasizes the need for conditioning and constant practice to internalize the principles and to make the art one's own.  Because of these things, I find the CGSS work very refreshing and personally empowering. - Pete P."

silat rant # 2

There are folks that teach the 'TRICKS & BEST TAKE DOWNS or TECHNIQUES" with out fundamentals and basics & principles.

You usually see them with many students. The masses that do not know are easily tricked into thinking that just because they know 1 silat move they all of a sudden are "gurus" .

You usually see them with many videos on youtube talking about how much they know about Silat or have travelled to xyz and did silat.

The reality is they probably learned from Dan Inosanto DVDs (not that there is anything wrong with that or that method Guru Dan Inosanto is a Silat Man of the highest caliber) or Youtube or a few seminars with some silat teachers.

How do you know?

If they do not have langkah they dont move well and usually they are still vulnerable to attack and failure.

If they are muscling a technique or they are using too much force to achieve anything they are not doing Silat. 4 ounces of pressure to defeat 1000lbs is the key.

If they do not have any realy structure or body alignement they wont move well and do not distribute energy properly in their movements which will only bring them vulnerability. Most are not even aware of their body dimensions and shoulder positions. Most fight Nose to Nose. Personally the only thing i want to do nose to nose is kiss my Wife! Combat nose to nose will get you killed or beat bad.

If they are doing things that look more like Muay Thai, JKD, FMA, KALI ESCRIMA, they are not really doing silat only a "little Silat".

Now you will notice the difference between people who do train basics and fundamentals, jurus, langkahs, martial science cause they are usually VERY effecient and when they move it looks as if nothing happened and as if the opponent just "gave it" to them. It almost looks fake.

:)

Peace & God Bless & Train & study & meditate on your SILAT!

Guru Santiago

There is always something deeper in SILAT

There are many people claim they teach Silat and show Silat but it looks and feels like everything BUT SILAT. Instead looks like people putting pieces together from a little JKD, a little FMA, a little Bjj, a little Kuntau with maybe 1 or 2 silat takedowns they learned on you tube by another fast food silat teacher. Sorry this is not Silat. Its just a "little" silat. However I will say this to quote my teacher & his Pendekar.... "A little silat goes a long way!" . There is nothing wrong with other styles and cross training and adding " a little silat" but if you really want to study silat deeply, you will want to train with a qualified instructor that really can apply and show you Pencak Silat. Like myself, I dug deep to find people that really knew the martial science with in the Art of Pencak Silat. If I want to study guitar I would go to the guitar teacher and player that can not only play in his bedroom but has been on stage to play aswell. I would not go to a "drummer" to learn how to play guitar. So the same principle applies here. If you wanted to learn silat you go to someone that has spent quality time training Silat. Not someone that has dabbled in a little of this and a little of that. A lot of guys that are more commercial with their schools sell you a big program and tell you well you need to learn this (JKD, MUAY THAI, KALI/FMA/ESCRIMA, WING CHUN,MMA etc) before you learn silat. But this is simply not true. If you want to learn how to play guitar you do not have to learn how to play drums 1st you just go to the qualified guitar instructor. Silat is the same way. Its like going to a restaurant and ordering a great pizza but instead you get some lomain noodles with some pizza chunks in there.

Peace

Guru Santiago Dobles

CGSS Pencak Silat Long distance training prt 3

Q & A

  1. How you will we learn Silat with CGSS LONG DISTANCE PROGRAM? You will learn silat by watching video clips sent to you in a private message either on Facebook or Email. Also you can interact with the instructor via skype or on the phone. Students are required to video tape themselves performing the weekly material that is sent to them either review, guidance and corrections by the Instructor. You can train all this stuff alone using "shadow Boxing". It is recommended that you get a training partner who also enrolls in the long distance training program and you both work out together learning the material. You will use your outline so you see more or less what is in the "ART" but in reality each thing in the outline is an art and science with in itself with loads of information.
  2. How long before we can test for rank? As the instructor sees your progress he will let you know when you are ready for ranking. Family based systems are not like "commercial dojo" black belt clubs etc. Even though we make silat commercially available to you, you must put in your time and train before you are considered by the instructor to take rank. The same goes for progressing to the levels of Junior Instructor & Senior Instructor & Full Instructor. More details will be posted on "ranking in CGSS". In the mean time you want to focus on your personal training of each weekly lesson. Get GOOD 1st then we will talk about RANK. Rank & Certificates are useless if you do not know the material and you can not use it properly.
  3. Will we learn Many techniques? No you will learn solid basics, principles and concepts that will allow you to have thousands of techniques if you choose to have them. We do not focus on technique instead we learn the martial science and principles. Each Week you work on one or two concepts or principles or aspects of your CGSS outline. The outline is not in any set ORDER instead the art is learned from all aspects & angles one step at a time. So its more like a circular experience than a "linear" one found in most common martial arts schools and systems. Remember SILAT has ALWAYS been a "CLOSED DOOR" system and it will remain truly a "Closed Door System" . So you will learn it as if you where learning it in person how I was taught by my Gurus and how I teach my personal local students.
  4. Am I allowed to Post my CGSS videos in Public? NO you are not allowed to post them in private or in public any where on the world wide web. If you do you will be kicked out of CGSS Perminantly.
  5. Am I allowed to Share the videos with my friends? Would you steal from your Mother & Father? Silat is a Family System lets keep it that way and honor the tradition and path you are about to walk on. If your friends wants to learn what you are doing encourage them to register and pay for the material. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars and put in 12 years + in to learning this art. I have travelled all over the USA and Abroad to train with the BEST to accuire this knowledge I will share with you and I will gladly share it from my heart but you must follow the rules and respect the Guru's wishes and the traditions with in SILAT. If you respect the art and its teachers they in turn will reveal even more to you. All in due time : )
  6. Does Age matter? You must be of 18 years of age and you can train even in your 90's ! as long as your physician says its ok.
  7. Do I need any special gear or equiptment? I recommend you get 3lb dumb bells, and 2x 5lb kettle bells & 2 x10lb kettle bells. We use these a lot in personal training and cimande conditioning. Also we recommend a good wobble board to train on the best we have found is the dr. Changos (google it you will find it). You will need a nice TREE to work with for conditioning a steel pole will do. Also I recommend you get some therapuetic stretch bands or chords. Also it is recommended to do your jurus (forms) in a pool of in water where you can swim more details will be given on this subject in video lessons. In Cimande its very common to train immersed in Water.
  8. Will i be able to compete with Silat in the RING? No Silat is not a SPORT its Lethal and very Dangerous. You will however learn to Survive in Life. Silat is not about fighting its about survival and preservation of Life.
  9. How do receive "RANK" in CGSS. when the instructor feels you are ready to advance in RANK you will take a video test. Being a annual CGSS member you do not have any "testing" fees.
  10. How do I become an instructor? You must come train with your instructor in person at least 1x a year. And when your instructor feels you are ready you will be given a chance to test for rank and for Instructorship in CGSS.
  11. When will I be able to start a TRAINING GROUP. After you have learned the basics in the 1st phase. All phases will be posted up soon. More info to come soon. : )

Peace & God Bless
