Subject: D.I. Silat Tip 11: Why Only Silat?

Subject: D.I. Silat Tip 11: Why Only Silat?
Silat Tip 11: Why Only Silat?

"Why do you only do Silat? Why do you not Cross train? You used to do
Muay Thai, JKD, KALI, how come now you only do SILAT? Silat is an
incomplete art there is no ground fighting like BJJ or UFC?"

Here is my answer:

Do we train stand up fighting & defending against one attacker? Yes

Against 2 attackers? Yes

Against 3 to 4 attackers ? Yes

Against a Knife attack ? Yes

Against a stick? Yes

Against a Gun ? Yes

Do we train against common ground attacks? Yes

Do we deal well with Single leg & double leg takedowns? Yes

Do we have ground fighting? Yes

Do we train dealing with multiple attackers while being on the ground?
Yes

Can we do what we do standing on the ground or on one knee or lying on
our backs? Yes

Do we deal with defending against attacks with out the use of our arms
as if handcuffed? Yes

Do we deal with being in locks or chokes? Yes

Do we use chokes and locks ? Yes but we do not stay to long in them to
become vulnerable to the next attacker. In the real "shit hits the fan"
scenario, you do not have much time; you have to either take the balance
or take the consciouness of the attacker ASAP by what ever means
neccesary.

Do we deal with learning how to attack or defend against armed and
unarmed attacks while "bodygaurding" defending someone else (a
bodygaurd client or family member). Yes

Here is a another one I always hear:

"All you guys do is take downs like Sapu & Biset there is no real
hitting or knocking people out like you see in the ring."

Do we kick? Yes

Do we work kicking with 360 degree awareness? Yes

Do we punch and also use open palm strikes? Yes

Do we elbow? I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER ART THAT USES THE ELBOW SO
EFFECIENTLY AND IN SO MANY WAYS.

Do we have a full understanding of Dim Mak? Marma Adi Pressure points?
Yes

We train Silat to Survive and Protect. Survival and mantaining of life
is the main priority by whatever means neccessary.

If your art allows you to still survive an attack and to protect
others even when you are drunk, half asleep, weak, young, old, skinny,
fat, in shape, out of shape, handicapped, then you are doing something
that is more or less SILAT.

In my opinion you would have to combine many "arts" to even come close
to the completeness of such an art such as Pencak Silat.

PUKULAN OR POEKOELAN: STRIKING WITH A REASON OR PURPOSE

PENT: EXACT OR PRECISE

JAK: USE

SILAT: TO FIGHT

Silat means Fighting.

We study the art of Fighting.

Now with this said, I believe that any good art that truly teaches
principles and teaches one to understand all aspects of Combat and
Fighting is just as good as any good Silat.

All true Internal Martial and Combative Arts in their highest levels
all start to look the same. This is why no matter what one should
always respect all martial art practitioners and various Styles of
martial arts. Its not the art itself its the practitioner that makes
the art.

Best wishes to all of you in your practice and your martial Path. If
you feel compelled to "cross train" do what your heart tells you. And
listen to your body. I have noticed that when real fighting occurs
most of the "art" goes out the window. But if you are real good the
"science and Strategy" stays with you to the end in a fight. Wars are
won on strategy and exact science so are fights. Use your heads and
stay out of trouble. Use your art as a means to self mastery and self
expression and protection of yourself and loved ones. Happy Holidays!
